Warehouse Equipment for Durham, NC

Durham sits where I-85 meets I-40 and the Durham Freeway, with I-885 tying US 70 into the freeway since 2022.

We handle the whole job rather than just selling the steel. Design, permitting, material, installation and, when the time comes, relocation. Stein is a licensed general contractor, so one company carries the project from the drawing through the final inspection.

Where We Work

Where the Warehouses Are in Durham, NC

Durham's warehouse space leans toward lab and pharmaceutical support rather than pure e-commerce fulfillment.

Research Triangle Park

Seven thousand acres, the largest research park in the country. About three quarters of the land is in unincorporated Durham County, which matters for permitting.

Treyburn Corporate Park

Fifty-three hundred acres in unincorporated county, served by city water and sewer. Merck, Novo Nordisk and Corning all have operations there.

The I-85 and I-885 interchange

The East End Connector opened in 2022 and gave trucks an I-40 to I-85 route around downtown. Class A distribution followed it in.

Permitting

Permits in Durham County

Durham does not have separate city and county building departments. One joint City-County Building and Safety Department handles permits, plan review and inspections for both, enforcing the state building code and both zoning ordinances.

Fire is where it splits. Inside city limits it is the City of Durham Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division. In unincorporated Durham County it is the Durham County Fire Marshal's Office. The county publishes a jurisdiction lookup tool because the address decides.

This trips up Research Triangle Park projects in particular. Most of RTP is unincorporated, so fire review goes to the county even though the building permit still comes from the joint department.

Under the International Fire Code you need a permit once a building holds more than 500 square feet of high-piled combustible storage, and high-piled means the top of the load sits above 12 feet. That covers most pallet rack projects. The code itself is the same in every jurisdiction, but the forms you file and the reviewer who reads them change from one county to the next.

  • Storage with the top of the load above 12 feet, whether rack, shelving or floor-stacked piles
  • More than 500 square feet of high-piled storage area
  • Combustible commodities, counting the carton and the wood pallet, not just the product
  • A new tenant or a change of use in an existing building

All commercial plan review goes through the county's digital system, and the set has to be separated by trade into individual files. Get the walkthrough before the anchors go in, while changes are still cheap. How our permitting process works

Used Equipment

We Buy and Sell Used Rack Too

Not every job needs new steel. We keep a used yard in Charlotte and sell out of it across the country, usually at a third to half off new. Kyle Austin runs that side and can tell you what is on the ground today.

It works the other way as well. If you are closing a Durham warehouse, relocating, or clearing out rack you no longer need, we buy it. Small quantities and large ones, and our crew does the removal.

Buy Used Rack

Sell Us Your Rack

We buy rack in every style, and we take small and large quantities. Send Kyle the type, the sizes and a rough count and he will come back with a number. Sell us your pallet rack
