Downtown Macon, Georgia

Warehouse Equipment for Macon, GA

Macon is where I-75, I-475 and I-16 meet. Norfolk Southern's Brosnan Yard, a 960-acre classification yard two miles from downtown, sorts roughly ten thousand railcars a week.

We handle the whole job rather than just selling the steel. Design, permitting, material, installation and, when the time comes, relocation. Stein is a licensed general contractor, so one company carries the project from the drawing through the final inspection.

Where We Work

Where the Warehouses Are in Macon, GA

Macon-Bibb's industrial parks are mostly run by the county industrial authority and cluster along the interstates.

Ocmulgee East Industrial Park

East of town off I-16 at Exit 6, the first interstate access on the Savannah run. It has been building out since 1972 and supports around seven thousand jobs.

Sofkee Industrial Park

South Bibb, with a Norfolk Southern rail siding available across its 583 acres. Irving Tissue built a 470 million dollar plant there and announced a further expansion.

The I-75 Business Park

Straight interstate frontage on the Atlanta to Florida lane. Tyson Foods put 59 million dollars into expanding its Macon distribution center there.

Permitting

Permits in Macon-Bibb County

Macon is a simple market to permit in. The city and county consolidated into a single Macon-Bibb County government in 2014, so there is no separate city building department to deal with.

Building and fire plan review sit in the same office, the Macon-Bibb County Building and Fire Safety Department.

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division is a second touchpoint. It checks new construction plans for water supply and access, so a warehouse project can see both offices.

Under the International Fire Code you need a permit once a building holds more than 500 square feet of high-piled combustible storage, and high-piled means the top of the load sits above 12 feet. That covers most pallet rack projects. The code itself is the same in every jurisdiction, but the forms you file and the reviewer who reads them change from one county to the next.

  • Storage with the top of the load above 12 feet, whether rack, shelving or floor-stacked piles
  • More than 500 square feet of high-piled storage area
  • Combustible commodities, counting the carton and the wood pallet, not just the product
  • A new tenant or a change of use in an existing building

A certificate of zoning compliance from the Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commission has to clear before a building permit is issued, so start there. Get the walkthrough before the anchors go in, while changes are still cheap. How our permitting process works

Used Equipment

We Buy and Sell Used Rack Too

Not every job needs new steel. We keep a used yard in Charlotte and sell out of it across the country, usually at a third to half off new. Kyle Austin runs that side and can tell you what is on the ground today.

It works the other way as well. If you are closing a Macon warehouse, relocating, or clearing out rack you no longer need, we buy it. Small quantities and large ones, and our crew does the removal.

Buy Used Rack

Sell Us Your Rack

We buy rack in every style, and we take small and large quantities. Send Kyle the type, the sizes and a rough count and he will come back with a number. Sell us your pallet rack
