Warehouse Equipment for Wilmington, NC

Wilmington is where I-40 ends, with I-140 looping the town and US 17, 74 and 421 feeding it. The state port is the anchor.

We handle the whole job rather than just selling the steel. Design, permitting, material, installation and, when the time comes, relocation. Stein is a licensed general contractor, so one company carries the project from the drawing through the final inspection.

Where We Work

Where the Warehouses Are in Wilmington, NC

Almost all of Wilmington's warehouse growth has concentrated along one road.

The US 421 North corridor

The region's industrial spine, running from town north toward the Pender County line. Flat sandy ground, utilities already run, and a straight shot to I-140 and the port.

The Port of Wilmington

The state port has roughly a million square feet of covered storage on the dock, with rail running to the berths.

Pender Commerce Park

North of the county line in Pender County. Amazon has a robotics fulfillment center here running more than three million square feet, and Maersk operates cold storage on the same park.

Permitting

Permits around Wilmington

Fire review depends on which side of the city line your building sits on. Inside Wilmington it is the City of Wilmington Fire Department's Office of the Fire Marshal. Outside it, New Hanover County Fire Rescue's Office of the Fire Marshal handles it.

That distinction matters more here than in most markets. The newer big-box space, including the US 421 corridor and Pender Commerce Park, is north of town and outside the city line. Pender Commerce Park is in a different county altogether.

New Hanover County Building Safety handles building permitting for the county, and the City of Wilmington handles zoning approval.

Under the International Fire Code you need a permit once a building holds more than 500 square feet of high-piled combustible storage, and high-piled means the top of the load sits above 12 feet. That covers most pallet rack projects. The code itself is the same in every jurisdiction, but the forms you file and the reviewer who reads them change from one county to the next.

  • Storage with the top of the load above 12 feet, whether rack, shelving or floor-stacked piles
  • More than 500 square feet of high-piled storage area
  • Combustible commodities, counting the carton and the wood pallet, not just the product
  • A new tenant or a change of use in an existing building

We confirm which offices apply to your address before anything gets drawn. Get the walkthrough before the anchors go in, while changes are still cheap. How our permitting process works

Used Equipment

We Buy and Sell Used Rack Too

Not every job needs new steel. We keep a used yard in Charlotte and sell out of it across the country, usually at a third to half off new. Kyle Austin runs that side and can tell you what is on the ground today.

It works the other way as well. If you are closing a Wilmington warehouse, relocating, or clearing out rack you no longer need, we buy it. Small quantities and large ones, and our crew does the removal.

Buy Used Rack

Sell Us Your Rack

We buy rack in every style, and we take small and large quantities. Send Kyle the type, the sizes and a rough count and he will come back with a number. Sell us your pallet rack
