If you are using pallet rack for your warehouse storage, you’ll most likely know that it comes in two configurations: roll formed, and structural. What you may not know is which kind of pallet rack is right for you?
Roll formed pallet rack is best for a warehouse that has a variety of inventory sizes. It is lightweight and very simple to adjust. This kind of pallet rack is usually “teardrop” style, and uses clips to easily change the size of the shelves using the teardrop shaped holes on the upright. Roll formed rack is very easy to install, adaptable, and cost effective, as it is less expensive than structural pallet rack. A disadvantage to roll formed pallet rack is that it is more prone to damage, and if it does get damaged, that portion needs to be replaced or repaired right away. If your forklift drivers are not as well trained or have a large amount of turnover, you would probably want to invest in protectors for this type of pallet rack.

Structural pallet rack (also known as heavy-duty pallet rack) is very strong and uses more steel than roll formed. It is more expensive, but can handle more abuse from forklifts so it wouldn’t need to be repaired or replaced as often. If you have a pallet racking system like drive-in, pallet flow, or push back you would want to use structural rack since the forklifts are driving in and out of the pallet rack and there is a higher chance of collision. This kind of pallet rack requires less maintenance, and is good in harsh conditions (like outside or freezer storage), for facilities with quick turnover, and for holding heavy loads. Besides the increased cost, another disadvantage of structural pallet rack is that it is heavier and more difficult to move.
Both types of pallet racking are better in different applications, and that should be taken into consideration when you are choosing the storage system for your warehouse.
