Does your warehouse store a lot of one product? Are you looking to increase the amount of inventory you can hold? If so, you should think about double deep pallet rack. It can be utilized in many applications to increase your facility’s storage capacity.
Double deep pallet rack is made of selective pallet rack placed back to back. In this manner, the pallets are stored two rows deep instead of one. Because with selective rack you have to have an aisle on either side to pick the inventory, in this situation, you are able to store more in the same amount of space. You can still pick from either aisle, but there are four pallets total instead of two. This helps if your warehouse has limited square footage, and selective pallet rack is less expensive than a whole system, like push back rack or pallet flow.

Another application that commonly uses double deep rack is if you need to store longer items, like carpet, metal pipes, or flooring. Often, space can be put in between the sections of selective rack with the inventory laying across it.
However, to properly use double deep pallet rack, you have to have a limited number of different products because you can’t access every pallet at a given time. It is LIFO (last in, first out), which means that perishable goods are not recommended to be stored in this type of system. So you have to store a reduced amount of SKUs, but you get a much higher storage density.
Since the double deep rack is selective pallet rack placed back to back two rows deep instead of one, with no aisle in between, you might have to modify your forklift or get a different kind. Usually reach trucks are used, or you can get a double deep handling attachment for your current forklift.
