For companies that deal with storing inventory like food, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals, they have to worry about another factor when choosing a storage system: cold storage. This type of storage can be tricky since the cost of cooling a space satisfactorily is so high. Because of this, you want to make sure you get your money’s worth and use all of the available space that you can.
Structural or galvanized pallet rack is most commonly used in these applications. One reason is that roll formed pallet racking, unlike structural, is a tube shape that could get food stuck in it. Most food companies require structural because of that. Another is that since it is a cold environment, there is going to be the possibility that there will be condensation on the rack, leading to rust. Galvanized pallet rack is hot dipped in zinc so that it doesn’t rust.
Drive through, drive in racks, and pallet flow racks are popular for cooler or freezer storage, because they are such high density systems. You can pack much more inventory in the same sized space than with selective pallet rack. However, you would need to have a low amount of SKUs to optimize these storage systems. Pallet flow is especially ideal for items with an expiration date, making it perfect for food storage.

When you are installing the pallet rack in the freezer or cooler, you have to be aware that there are some limits regarding the installers. The colder the temperature, the less time the workers can spend inside the space installing at one time. Keep in mind that it might take a bit longer to install your system due to these safety restrictions.
