The Challenge

A repeat customer in the baby products industry approached Stein Service & Supply after one of their pallet rack uprights was struck by a forklift and damaged. A compromised upright reduces the load capacity of the entire bay and creates an immediate safety risk for warehouse staff. Beyond the urgent repair, the customer also wanted to prevent the same kind of impact from recurring – both at the affected location and across other vulnerable points in the facility.

The Solution

Drawing on our longstanding relationship with the customer, Stein quoted a replacement upright for the damaged section along with end of rack guards to protect uprights in the tunnel bays and at the ends of every row.

The standard end of rack guards we initially specified would have done the job, but their footprint was a concern. They would have occupied too much floor space in the tunnel bays and end of rows, restricting forklift traffic in the customer’s already tight aisles. Rather than push the original quote, our team revised the design to use Handle It space-saving end of rack guards, which install around the upright baseplates and take up significantly less space in the aisle than standard guards. The level of protection stays the same while the operational footprint shrinks.

Because the customer was running heavy volume through the holiday season, Stein worked around their schedule and shifted the installation window back to accommodate their busiest weeks. When installation did happen, the damaged upright was replaced, and end of rack guards were added throughout the tunnel bays and end of rows.

The result is a warehouse with full storage capacity restored and a meaningful safety upgrade – all uprights in the highest-traffic, highest-risk locations are now protected against forklift impact, with no significant reduction in usable floor space.
