Case Study

Engineered Fabric Supplier for Textile Industry

The Challenge

Stein had completed a project previously to provide a warehouse storage system for fabric rolls. The project was a huge success; however, with several years of consistent growth, the customer had outgrown the initial storage layout. They needed to modify their pallet rack layout in the existing warehouse, while also providing a similar solution in a new one. There was a challenge for the new warehouse due to the lower ceiling heights, and well as the need to work around the production, packing and shipping areas in the existing.

The Solution

The clear ceiling height in the new warehouse was lower than the existing warehouse, so in order to save the customer money and utilize all existing racks, we moved some of the existing “shorter” racks to the new warehouse, and replaced them with taller racks that provided additional storage levels in the existing warehouse. We also designed the new warehouse storage system to accommodate a mixture of roll lengths, as well as palletized materials. All racks were designed with corrugated steel decking, which is required for individual roll storage, but would also accommodate full pallet storage. This will allow changes in future product mix without needing to change between corrugated decks and wire mesh decks. The corrugated decks will handle both.
Immediately after beginning the installation, we discovered that a major travel corridor for forklifts was incorrectly located on the initial CAD drawing. While we could have installed the racking as previously planned with no disruptions, we determined that if we modified the warehouse layout slightly, we could actually add more racking into the same area. We created an alternate layout, which the customer approved. The additional materials were ordered from our stocking warehouse and delivered with 2 days.

We initially estimated a project time of ten days. The customer agreed to allow our mobilized crew to work extended evening hours (at no extra charge), and the entire project completed in six days.

The customer now has extended height racks in the existing warehouse, and a new warehouse with a storage solution that will allow for years of future growth.
