High Piled Storage for Rug Distributor
Recently, a rug distributor opened a brand-new 106,000 square-foot warehouse to process and ship returns. The customer met with one of our Warehouse Solutions Specialist to talk about the layout of the facility. Several possibilities were discussed regarding how the customer wanted the layout of the high piled storage rack, equipment, and flow to be processed and received.
Once the materials were finalized and ordered, the layout needed one final last-minute change. Our Warehouse Solutions Specialist modified the CAD layout to suit the customer’s needs. That very same day, we revised the required materials with the manufacturer by phone.
The process for obtaining a permit for the project was difficult because the city needed a letter from the local fire department’s fire protection engineer to make sure that the sprinkler system in the facility could handle the commodity. The first letter received required additions to the racking system that were unfeasible for the customer to use. Our permitting experts dug into the code and realized that the wrong commodity class was being used in the engineer’s analysis. Our permitting experts worked with the engineer, who agreed, and got the letter modified and to the city for approval.
The racking hadn’t yet been installed because the building construction wasn’t ready for it. The contractor and our operations team unloaded truckloads of shipments and relocated them so they could finish installing the racks. While this did put us slightly behind on the installation schedule, extra crew were added so the job could be finished by the original completion date provided to the customer.
When the project was complete, the rugs were moved to the racks according to the customer’s specifications. Overall, the customer was very happy with the new layout as well as with the warehouse installation process.
